HALLOWEEN AND LA-TOO-SAY 2026

Tomorrow is November 1st.

It is a day that Christians around the world celebrate as All Saints Day , in honor of all Christian Saints.
It is also known as All Hallows.
October 31st is All Saints Eve or if you prefer , All Hallows Eve , the day Americans call “Hallow’een .

Growing up in Trinidad we never celebrated Halloween , to us that was a somewhat foreign American custom.
But we certainly celebrated All Saints, La Toussaint ( La Too-say in local dialect) , which was definitely observed and enjoyed by many.

Part of the annual La too-say ritual was illuminating our homes with candles , visiting, cleaning and decorating the graves of our deceased loved ones , and on the Eve we would visit the graves , which would be covered with candles , wreaths , flowers etc.
For that night , the entire cemetery would be illuminated by candle light, and as kids that would be the only time we felt safe in a cemetery as we ran and played among the graves.
It was beautiful , especially when I lived and the country , and the brightly lit cemetery provided a stark contrast to the rural darkness.
So, whether you celebrate La-too-say, or Halloween, have a great time with your friends and loved ones, and especially to the kids, be safe, remember that we’re also fondly remembering our loved ones who have passed on 🙏!
