“Is De Pan in Me” ( Lord Kitchener ) – The perfect steelpan calypso.

In my opinion ,Lord Kitchener’s ” Is de Pan in Me” is the perfect steelpan calypso.
As a matter of fact , I think it should be some sort of a pan players anthem.

Apart from the sweet and exciting melody , the Grand Master’s lyrics tell a story that is all too familiar with those of us who , as youths , went against our family’s wishes, and joined steel-bands in the nineteen fifties and sixties , a time when steelband players (mostly young men back then ) were considered almost “outcasts” , as claimed by the Mighty Sparrow in his hit calypso, “Outcast”.

By the same token , I also happen to think that Jit Samaroo’s arrangement for Renegades did justice to the tune.

As a matter of fact , I also happen to think that the arrangement is perfect for the tune , even though it didn’t catch the judges fancy that year at panorama.

Not enough “bells and whistles” or fancy flourishes , I guess.

  1. Thank you Sir Joseph!!! I had NEVER heard the original Kitch calypso song before now! I love the Renegades and Dr. Samaroo’s arrangement is great as usually it was. I think it is important to be familiar with the root song when listening to any panorama performance. Especially when several bands are interpreting the same song. Both music can be enjoyed apart from each other, yet one is the parent of the offspring! Love hearing them together like this!
