Before I forget , I would like to list all the Southern Marines players I remember from the days when Marines were the sweetest steelband in south.
These men were also members of the band that won the first panorama ever , which was South Panorama that was held before the national panorama in 1963.
This was also the period we were transitioning from single pans (around neck) to multiple pans ,and adding new pans like cellos etc.
My list may not be complete , so feel free to add anyone I may have forgotten.
Most of the members were on the stage side , but I’ve also named some notable “road side ” players.
On tenors:
Karloff Alleyne , Burch Kellman , Randolph Cummings ( who was a crackshot , if there ever was one).
Double seconds
Lloyd Hughes , Anthony “Food” Patrick , Stephen Herry
On bas pans ( also called grundigs)
Grouch
Balthazar
Michael Alleyne played cellos , and guitar pan in the pan round neck days.
Kenneth Sargeant also played cellos.
On bass , Clyde Rivers , Frankie Goolie , Baby Denny , Claude Villafana ,Beresford “Berry” Benjamin , and Burch Kellman’s brother Vivian
A Bajan guy called Surgeon was a standout on the five note bass , which was quite effective on the road in the pan round neck era.
I know I’ve missed quite a few ,and I will extend the list as I remember but some of these guys were my early pan heroes , and are deserving of being remembered.
Marabella people , Southern Marines and south pan fans , feel free to add to my list if you can.
